For honey to be "certified organic", the first step is to ensure the beehives can be declared fit for organic production, which means the bees must be healthy, require no medications and all hive components must be used only for organic production. The area in which the bees forage for the nectar must also be certified organic, as there can be no pesticide applications on any of the foliage. Since bees can fly up to 2-3 miles from a hive, this requires large tracts of land to be free from any chemical applications.
At present, Dutch Gold Honey is sourcing organic honey from Brazil, primarily due to the healthy condition of the honey bees in the region and the large, unpopulated areas of land that can be set aside for organic production.
